  • The dogs bollocks has lots of funny coffee signs in Gardens Coffee Area of Cape Town.
Here's just a taste of their no bullshit attitude.

A Spot where Soul is at the Center

The Dogs Bollocks has been around for a while but it’s a spot that has certainly kept its soul. In the day, it’s a breakfast bar serving Deluxe coffee but by night it’s a boisterous burger bar selling whiskey, wine and beer for the blokes and betties. Located in Gardens, The Dogs Bollocks is a spot to steal your soul and kick you up the ass to make you whole.

Atmosphere:

It’s one of those coffee shops where you just feel cool walking through the door. The Blues tunes screeching, the furniture all unmatched and the staff throwing swear words around like its 1969. It’s the kind of spot you come to lighten the soul and a spot where your serious self gets kicked out the door. It’s all done so imperfectly, it feels absolutely perfect.

The aesthetics in the air are just plain cool. The coffee shop is at the back, stuffed into a secret alley that’s filled with paintings, pictures and people. The people sit on chairs that don’t match and tables that aren’t the same. As you look up, the roof is exposed giving you the perception of an old warehouse. Down from the roof hang lamps that look as if they were found in a 1920s flappers club.

Coffee & Food:

The coffee is a dark bitter brew but that doesn’t surprise me at all given the name of the place is the Dog’s Bollocks. The Flat Whites come in a bit of a smaller cup, almost like a Cortado but the aftertaste lingers in the mouth like a 70% Lindt Chocolate.

Scrumptious no bullshit brekkies on offer. I had a ‘Way Better than Baked Beans” breakfast which tasted as if it had taken the Blues train straight down from Mexico. However, that could just be the influence of the music in the background. Blues and bands blare in the background to keep your heading boppin’ so you can work or chat without stoppin’.

It’s probably one of the coolest spots I’ve been in a while, not much bad to say except I’ll for sure be here another day. Located on 6 Roodehek Street in Gardens, it’s probably a stone’s throw away from your work. So why sit in traffic on the way back home, when there’s a cool bluesy spot that’ll put you in the perfect tone.

If it’s too hardcore for you or you’re just looking for something fast, have a look at Barista Cup and read about Gcobani’s amazing story.

If you’re still haven’t found a spot, this coffee guide to Cape Town may help you.
