A Durban Classic has a Home of its Own
Florida Road has no shortage of coffee shops and so it takes a lot to stand out in the area. Thankfully Skyline Coffee Roasters seem to have what it takes.
Sharing a space with The Big Box Company, the roastery which has been supplying much of the East Coast with coffee. They’ve just opened the first espresso bar under the Skyline Coffee Roasters name. It’s a beautiful space with a lovely atmosphere. It is well lit and decorated to be a space mixed between productivity and calmness, and comfort and openness. It feels communal without losing the feeling of being a second home of sorts. Skyline Coffee seems to attract all the right kind of people with its comfortable environment. Everybody is friendly, whether they’re there to work or chill, people sip their coffee or grab a serving of overnight oats to rejuvenate after a long cycle. These oats happen to be delicious, by the way.
It’s evident that Skyline Coffee Roasters are a group of coffee people who are good with people, but happen to be even better with coffee. Their drinks are some of the smoothest, easy drinking coffees out there. They’re a perfect morning coffee that practically anyone can enjoy. They also serve a single origin of the week, generally with the a couple peculiar flavours. One of their coffees is from Burundi which was used at the World Barista Championships in 2018, placing fourth.
Each drink is made from beans that have been carefully sourced, expertly roasted and then wonderfully brewed. The coffees are always delicious and poured to perfection, generally served by Siyanda, one of Durbans favourite baristas. He’s fast, consistent and sweet. The rest of the staff are also great. They know their coffee well and it’s not strange to be greeted like a long time friend by Jamie or Dyl, Skyline’s power couple.
Durban’s coffee scene is growing at a remarkable pace and places like Skyline are the reason why. It is the ideal combination of warm community and great coffee and is well worth a visit.
