Saucisse is a Deli for the Jazz Ages
Sauisse is a Woodstock classic, making you feel like Woodstock is the same as it was 70 years ago. It’s your local deli up the road, fit for anyone looking for a quick take-away or a sit-down meal.
With a big selection of cheese, pastries and meats, the focus is all on the food. Delicious croissants, mouth-watering tarts and cakes that will make you jitter and jump. On the menu they’ve also got a range of classic breakfasts that look fit for a king. If you’re here after 1, they’ve got sandwiches and salads that will sort out your sobriety. There’s no booze on the menu either, so don’t be stressed. The food is pricey but with the meat, cheese and bread being fresh, I reckon it’ll be damn delicious.
The coffee is a Captain Kirnis classic. Unfortunately, the barista skills aren’t the best in the west but hey. The coffee is also a little expensive, but they’ve got some delicious looking teas on the menu for R15 a pop. If you’re feeling spicy, I’d opt for their super flat whites which include the golden turmeric and red velvet cocoa for R28.
The vibe inside is cute, sweet and filled with character. It feels like it’s got a somewhat hipster Victorian vibe with off greens and creams filling the room. One of the walls is covered with pictures of Cape Town back in the day. The opposite wall is filled with trendy corner store stuff and the fridges are filled with tasty cheese and meats.
The music that plays in the background will make you feel like you’ve just been to a classical concert. They’ve also got a great outside sitting area where you can stare at a water feature from way back when. On a hot day, the sun will give you a superb tan, but I’d recommend hiding inside when it’s cold.
If you want to feel like you’re in the jazz era or if you like good wholesome food, give Sauisse a shot. It’s located in the Biscuit Mill so make sure you come during the week to ensure it’s calm and quiet.
