A Beautiful Escape just outside Cape Town
Klein Joostenberg is a beautiful spot at the end of Durbanville. It’s a renovated version of an old farm house that sits on the greenest grass in the land. They’ve got a deli, butchery and even a brewing company on the yard.
Coffee & Food:
The coffee is good, a lil’ hot but sweet and sensational on the first sip. Other than the lack of creative latte art and it being a little hot, the coffee is real divine and full of flavour. Served in Terbodore cups, I’m tempted to believe the coffee they use is theirs. I asked about where it’s from, but I got confused chuckles in reply, so I can’t really tell ya.
I had a venison pie while I was at the Café and to be honest, it was tasty but I’d rather get a pie at the Deli next door for half the price. However, if you’re looking for a place to chill, the Café is real comfy. They’ve got different menus for different times of the day but the menu generally consists of relatively light lunches.
Atmosphere:
Inside it’s modern chic, with plastic chairs and plywood tables filling the Café. Outside it’s much the same but they’ve got a couple of beautiful benches scattered through the green green yard. There’s a fire place inside which really warms the room and provides for great atmospheric enjoyment. The one side of the room is literally a giant long window that looks out into the garden and trees that lie scattered around.
Stellenbosch Brewing Company
Opposite the Café stands the Stellenbosch Brewing Company, surrounded by awning walls that look like they could withstand a hurricane. Stellenbosch Brewing company has an amazing story its own, started in 2013 when Bruce Collins started selling home brewed beer to his friends. Instantly a hit, he started figuring out how he could mass produce his beer to serve the masses. He initially started brewing in a back shed at Klein Joostenberg but in 2015, opened up the taptoom on the Klein Joostenberg property. It’s a local lekker spot to grab a bezza and watch some live music, if you’re lucky enough to catch some.
Klein Joostenberg is a fantastic lil’ spot that really feels like a complete escape away from the city. Located just outside the Northern Suburbs, on the Stellenbosch turn off from the N1, it’s a great place to grab a pie, drink a beer and soothe the soul.
