A Clinical Coffee Shop with Great Coffee in Newlands

Hazz, one of the big coffee cats in Cape Town, located in the sunny suburb of Newlands. It’s a real Southern Suburbs school joint with kids studying, parents working and others meeting to get their stuff done. Laptops are the norm here unless you’re old enough to know how to hold a newspaper without it falling apart.

Atmosphere:

It’s quite a strange coffee shop, seemingly stylish for those with kids at school in the area.  It’s a spot for the stylish suburban mom or the suburban kid that just wants to seem stylish. It’s got a real clinical vibe to it, with smokers shouted at if they’re in sight of the shop and the staff giving the customers very little information.

As I look around, the room is filled with white clean surfaces and walls, all adding to the clinical appeal. They’ve got funky bendy chairs that look as if they belong in an art gallery and one brown couch that looks like the one Shaggy would have sat in. They’ve got all kinds of coffee goodies for sale including grinders, French presses and tea pots. This makes it a fantastic place to get all the equipment you need to make yourself a professional home brewer.

Coffee & Food:

The coffee at Hazz is real sweet and flavoursome, a couple flavour notes I haven’t tasted before. It’s definitely one of the most flavoursome coffees I’ve had in a while, one that feels like fairies are floating in my mouth. Hazz has a simple style, whites all around, almost as if you’re in a sterilized hospital. I tried asking about their beans, but they weren’t too eager to help me, just letting me know it was a four-way mix.

It’s not much of a menu spot but rather a pick what’s in the fridge kind of a joint. On offer they’ve got sarmies, wraps and a range of delightfully delicious baked goods which include brownies, mini cheese cakes and muffins. While the chicken mayo wrap I had while I was there wasn’t out of this world, the baked goods did look like they’d been imported from outer space.

Hazz is a straight and simple coffee shop in Newlands, Cape Town but I guess that’s the appeal. It’s a great place to plug in some head phones and work the day away. If you’re looking for a coffee shop to feel like a family, this may not be the spot for you but if you’re wanting to be on your own, pop into Hazz Coffee on 51 Kildare Road in Newlands.
