A Piece of Cuba on African Soil
El Greeyo is a piece of Cuba bundled up in Cape Town. It’s a roastery in Woodstock that will make you feel at home with their atmospheric attic upstairs. It’s a great spot to work, read or cuddle with a significant other on the couches that overlook the Devil’s Mountain.
Inside El Greeyo, there’s an upstairs and a downstairs area. The upstairs is funky and cool, consisting of couches and tables, both ideal for dates or meetings in a comfortable space. I spent the day lounging on a couch and staring out at Devils Peak which filled the glass wall in the front of the building. As I looked around, atmospheric Cuban paintings popped out and made me feel like I’m living the Latino life.
Downstairs is where the magic happens with a large roaster filling half the room. The counter and kitchen are also downstairs so if you’re not a fan of noise, rather move upstairs. Cuban music fills the whole place that makes me want to stand up and sway my hips like a tripper at a trance festival.
Coffee & Food:
My first coffee was simply sensational, delivering sweet flavour notes that pack a punch of fairy dust with every sip. Delightfully delicious. They’ve got a lot of coffees on offer, focusing on Cuban coffee but also offering plenty of single origins from all round the world. El Greeyo is a roastery so one can be rest assured that the coffee is fresh and has come straight from the source, in whatever country they’re at.
The menu is a perfect coffee shop menu, offering sandwiches, burgers and burritos. The food is heavenly and homely at an incredibly affordable price with most items weighing in at the R50 – R60 mark. I had the original beef burger which tasted as if I’d smoked the very best Cuban cigar, especially considering it only cost me R58 with chips. They’ve also got cakes, muffins and quiches on offer too if you’re not down for a full meal.
It’s a super vibrant place that I could definitely chill at all day. The staff are super friendly, and the views are some of the best in Woodstock. If you’re looking for a place to plonk your butt for the day and enjoy the atmosphere around you, then I think this might be it. Pop in and check out El Greeyo located in Brickfield Park on 18 Brickfield Road in Salt River, Cape Town.
