  • The entrance to Black and Brew in Hout Bay is a wooden shed with a big tree on the left and a stone archway on the right.
It's a work under progress but it's a great spot with views that will crumble your eyes.

A Kid’s Classic with a Spectacular View

Opened by two best mates eager to get out of the Dubai advertising game. Black and Brew is just about as far away from urban abys as one can get. Black and Brew is a farm house styled coffee shop with views of the Hout Bay mountains and connecting escarpment that will give you the break your brain deserves.

The coffee is Deluxe and comes served simply in black and white cups. Just because the style is monotonic, it doesn’t mean the coffee isn’t good because it’s pretty near damn divine. On the menu, they’ve also got a range of teas, cold pressed juices and a couple different kombucha’s for those in need of a healthy kick.

If you feel like muching on the menu, they’ve got a range of beautiful breakfasts that’ll make you laugh as you read them through to the list of lavish lunches. On weekdays, the menu is pretty comprehensive but on weekends, it’s shortened to deal with the madness of the crowds. There’s a kid’s menu too, offering dishes for about half the price of the regular menu. If you’re not keen for a full meal, Black and Brew also have croissants and scones. Their gourmet muffins will send your sweet tooth straight to the Tooth Fairy’s home.

Opened by two best mates, Jesse Armstrong and Darren McCall, eager to get out of the advertising game in Dubai, the two wondered “What’s the most down to Earth thing we can do?” Over a cup of coffee, the answer quickly arose, and a coffee shop became the obvious choice. Black and Brew has been around now for almost a year but there’s still much in the pipeline for the duo.

The inside feels like an old farm house stable, filled with hay bales and wooden aesthetics. They’ve got a couple play areas, both inside and outside to ensure the parents catch a break while the kids run haywire. It is a kid-heavy spot, so be warned that there may be a bit of kicking and screamin’ as you sip at your coffee.

If you’re a kid fanatic, we’ve got good news for you because they’ve got a whole range of activities for the little ones. These activities include feeding the donkeys, catching the chickens and even cycling around the boisterous bike track which is equipped with a fuel stop and fire station. For the parents, they have tables situated in loose shade, providing a sweet sense of warmth and comfort on a hot summer’s day.

It’s a lekker little spot, suitable for the whole family. If you’re looking for a mid-week escape or a weekend break, then I reckon this is the spot for you. If the kid’s corner doesn’t entertain you, then I can guarantee the view will pop your eyes out of their sockets. Pop in for a quality cup of coffee and a chat at Black and Brew. Black and Brew is located on Valley Road in Hout Bay.

  1. Great spot! Love taking the kids there for tea time. I can actually relax a bit, because while they may be running amok. I can be rest assured that they won’t get into too much trouble, cause there’s only one or two gates.
