  • The Food Barn is a coffee shop in Noordehoek that sells fresh pastries and coffee.

A Retro-Civilized Farmhouse styled Deli

The Food Barn, located in the Noordehoek Farm Village is a great coffee shop to grab some grub and a coffee while you’re on a trip down South. The treats at the Food Barn will make you tickle with taste while the vibe will put you back into the 1800s.

Coffee & Food:

The coffee comes perfectly prepared in a real South African style with a giant latte protea on top. The cup and saucer that sit below are Le Cruset which in my books, usually means the coffee is going to be good. And that it is, perhaps a bit watery but nothing to cry home about, it’s still damn fine.

The food on the menu is pretty homely and delicious, all the baked goods looking like they were cooked in your grandmother’s house. I had a chicken and red wine pie and oh boy, was it full of flavour. I must be honest, it was pipin’ hot when it arrived so I didn’t really taste the first half of the pie, but the second half was just damn right delicious.

Mmm.. the pear and almond tart is out of this world, the texture of the crust is what I imagine the texture of Mars to feel like and the inside is how I imagine tarts on the other side of the Pearly Gates to taste.

Atmosphere:

The Food Barn Deli is quite a retro-civilized type of place. The kind of place I can imagine a farmer in the 1800s riding his horse to come and buy some bread. The place isn’t that old but the stone floors and the old wooden tables make it feel like it’s lived a life. It’s the kind of place I can imagine having a village feast at and I guess that makes sense, given that the Food Barn’s focus is on food.

It’s located in a wine cellar, so it does have a very close and intimate feel to it. We came on a weekday so luckily there weren’t too many people but on weekend’s it can get quite packed and almost claustrophobic. It’s not really a work spot but you can make it happen if you sit on the side, they’ve got plug points and quite a bit of natural light.

It’s definitely a spot to bring the family on a wintery weekend but just be prepared for the crowds. The food is out of this world and the coffee is pretty damn near the moon. If you’re looking for a chill spot outside Cape Town, the Food Barn Deli definitely has you sorted, located on the corner of Village Lane and Noordehoek Main Road.
